Fix it Friday: study habits
If you're currently in college, exams are probably already stressing you out or will start to when you wake up Monday at 10 for your 9 o'clock accounting final (it happens to the best of us). I'm here to offer up some ways to fix your study habits.
- Don't procrastinate! If you start studying the night before your exam you're likely to go well into the night. The problem is after a certain time your brain just stops accepting new information. This means you need sleep. An all nighter isn't as productive as one might think. So start studying well in advance...it will save you from some premature grey hairs.
- Take breaks every so often while studying. An eight hour study session will both stress you out and make you want to have a televised cagematch with the dude who invented calculus (Newton?). Small breaks will ease your desire for fisticuffs.
- Study with friends. Information is much easier to digest when you can talk it out with other people. Stay focused in these groups though...don't talk about Justin Beiber's newest haircut or which Twilight team you're on...FOCUS!
- There is this mysterious building on campus with all kinds of books. I think it's called the library...or something like that...USE IT! Your dorm, apartment, house, shipping container....wherever you live has way too many distractions. You end up spending roughly 20% of your time studying and the other 80% facebooking, tweeting, web surfing, Xbox-ing, and various other -ing's. Find a nice quiet place with no distractions. You'll thank me later.
- Don't be afraid to ask for help. Despite what you may think, professors actually LIKE it when students come to their office and ask for help (What a concept, I know!).
Add these tips to your arsenal of study habits and exam grades will likely skyrocket (results may vary). Study hard this weekend but find the time to go out and do something fun...for the sake of your sanity.
