Thrifty Thursday: Plane tickets
So, after these plane tickets cost me an arm and a leg to get to Europe I decided to research a bit more to find tips and tricks on getting them cheaper so the same thing doesn't happen to you. Your welcome in advance.
- Gumby your way to savings: Flexibility is key when it comes to saving money on flights. If possible, don't get hung up on a certain day...plan around the most travelled days. The cheapest days to fly are Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays...as well as catching a red-eye late at night.
- Plan ahead: The further in advance you can schedule your flight the better. If you schedule at least 21 days in advance you can receive advance ticket discounts.
- "The Mighty Three": If never hurts to check Travelocity, Orbitz, and Expedia...as they are great sites that keep you updated on some of the latest deals and sales. The only problem is they don't list all airlines...so shop around a bit more outside of these sites as well.
- Beat the system: To save a bit more money post-"mighty three" check out the airline's website that they say has the best deal. Since the mighty three have to pay the bills as well they usually charge more fees, thus making it more expensive for you. You can usually save 20-30 bucks by booking through the actual airline. Scoop!
- CU Rewards: Run your South Carolina Federal Credit Union debit card as credit as much as possible because you earn CU Rewards points every time you do which can turn into awesome stuff like free flights!
- Last resort: Take up long distance running, swimming, and/or sailing....but if you do, I hope your vacation is long!
Follow these tips and you'll be well on your way to a heavier wallet! Is anyone else planning any trips this summer? Let me know where you're going!
Stay young & free,
Darryl
